DIMETHYL FUMARATE

Dimethyl Fumarate is an oral immunomodulatory medication used primarily to treat multiple sclerosis. It has anti-inflammatory and neuroprotective properties, reducing the relapse rate and delaying disease progression in patients.

Indications

-Treatment of relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis (RRMS) -Management of plaque psoriasis (in some cases)


Dosage

-Multiple Sclerosis: Initial dose: 120 mg twice daily for 7 days, followed by 240 mg twice daily. -Psoriasis (off-label): Dosage varies; consult a healthcare provider. -Can be taken with or without food, though taking with food may reduce gastrointestinal side effects.


Contra-Indications

-Known hypersensitivity to Dimethyl Fumarate or any excipients in the formulation -Severe active infections -Pregnant or breastfeeding women should consult their doctor before use.


Special Precautions

-Monitor for signs of progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy (PML), a rare brain infection. -May cause lymphopenia; regular blood tests are recommended. -Caution in patients with a history of liver or kidney disorders.


Side Effects

-Flushing -Nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea -Abdominal pain -Pruritus (itching) -Liver enzyme elevation -Increased risk of infections due to reduced white blood cell count


Drug Interactions

-Immunosuppressive drugs may increase the risk of infections. -Live vaccines should be avoided while taking Dimethyl Fumarate. -Concurrent use with other fumaric acid derivatives may lead to additive side effects.
