Azilsartan Medoxomil

It is an angiotensin II receptor antagonist indicated for the treatment of hypertension, either alone or in combination with other antihypertensive agents.It is found to be more effective in reducing systolic blood pressure.

Indications

-Hypertension (primary/essential) -Can be used alone or in combination with other antihypertensive agents -May be prescribed in patients requiring ARB therapy where other ARBs are not tolerated

Dosage

Adults: -Usual starting dose: 40 mg once daily -Maximum recommended dose: 80 mg once daily -Adjustments may be required based on patient response, age, renal or hepatic function. -Can be taken with or without food. (Dosage to be confirmed by prescribing physician.)

Contra-Indications

-Hypersensitivity to Azilsartan or any component of the formulation -Pregnancy (especially 2nd and 3rd trimester) -Severe hepatic impairment -Concomitant use with aliskiren in patients with diabetes

Special Precautions

Paediatric: Data not sufficient. Pregnancy: Category C for first trimester and category D for second and third trimester. Lactation: Data not sufficient. Elderly: Serum creatinine to be monitored.

Side Effects

Hypotension/orthostatic hypotension, diarrhea, nausea, asthenia, spasm, dizziness.

Drug Interactions

NSIDS/COX-2 inhibitors, ACE inhibitors.
