Akums Drugs & Pharmaceuticals Expands Global Footprint with Landmark Manufacturing Facility in Zambia

New Lusaka plant to boost local production, create over 1,000 jobs, and strengthen access to affordable medicines across Africa

In a major stride toward strengthening global healthcare accessibility, India’s largest Contract Development and Manufacturing Organization (CDMO) — Akums Drugs & Pharmaceuticals Ltd. — has announced the groundbreaking of its first overseas manufacturing facility in Lusaka, Zambia.

The landmark event marks a historic collaboration between Akums and the Government of the Republic of Zambia (GRZ), underscoring a shared mission to make high-quality, affordable medicines accessible to millions across Africa. The initiative represents a key milestone in Akums’ global expansion strategy, aimed at promoting healthcare excellence, expanding exports, and building sustainable pharmaceutical ecosystems in emerging regions.

A Major Step Toward Africa’s Healthcare Self-Reliance

The upcoming facility, spread over 40 acres in the Lusaka South Multi-Facility Economic Zone, will be Zambia’s first large-scale pharmaceutical production unit. It will manufacture a wide range of dosage forms including tablets, capsules, liquids, injectables, topicals, and beta-lactam products—covering essential and life-saving drugs.

Once operational, the plant is expected to generate over 1,000 local jobs and significantly reduce Zambia’s dependence on imported medicines. It will cater to domestic demand and also serve regional markets under SADC and COMESA, positioning Zambia as a regional pharmaceutical hub for Southern Africa.

“A Powerful Alignment of Vision”

Speaking at the groundbreaking ceremony, Mr. Sandeep Jain, Managing Director and Founder of Akums Drugs & Pharmaceuticals Ltd., said,“Our philosophy has always been centered on patient well-being and accessibility. This partnership with the Government of Zambia represents a powerful alignment of vision — to ensure that high-quality, affordable medicines reach every individual in need. Through advanced manufacturing practices, global quality systems, and a patient-centric approach, we aim to strengthen Zambia’s healthcare foundation while fostering regional self-reliance and innovation.”

He added that this initiative marks a crucial step in Akums’ global manufacturing expansion, as the company actively explores new opportunities to serve healthcare needs across continents.

Endorsed by Zambian Leadership

President Hakainde Hichilema officially launched the project, calling it a “historic step toward medical self-sufficiency and economic empowerment.” He emphasized that the partnership reflects Zambia’s commitment to building a stronger and more resilient healthcare system.

Minister of Youth, Sport, and Arts, Mr. Elvis Nkandu, also praised the initiative’s potential to transform the nation’s pharmaceutical landscape by reducing dependency on imports, lowering treatment costs, and bolstering national health security.

Strengthening Healthcare and the Economy

Zambia’s pharmaceutical market is witnessing robust growth driven by expanding healthcare access, government initiatives for affordability, and increasing demand for quality medicines.

The new Akums facility will not only build local technical capacity but also stimulate economic growth, helping Zambia emerge as a vital player in Africa’s healthcare manufacturing network.

As Akums takes this bold leap beyond India’s borders, the project stands as a symbol of South-South cooperation — a shared commitment between India and Africa toward a healthier, more self-reliant future.
