Global Demand for Indian Herbal Medicine Skyrockets with New Quality Guarantee
Over time, Indian health methods have slowly made their way into everyday life all over the world, from busy yoga studios in New York to cafés in London that serve turmeric lattes. What began as a hobby has quickly grown into a global healthcare industry, with India's traditional medical systems becoming accepted around the world in a way that has never been seen before.
In the two years between 2023-24 and 2024-25, India's exports of AYUSH and plant goods rose by 6.11 per cent, from USD 649.2 million to USD 688.89 million. The creation of the Ayush Export Promotion Council (AYUSHEXCIL) has accelerated growth. This shows that there is more demand for Indian traditional medicine and health goods around the world.
The world is moving away from drugs and towards better mental, preventative, and maternal health. This is what is happening. Stress during pregnancy has been linked to health problems in the unborn child for a long time. Cortisol is a stress hormone that can cross the placenta when a woman is pregnant and has been stressed for a long time. To put it simply, such stress can hurt the baby's brain as it grows. The result makes it more likely that the baby will be born with a low weight and have behaviour issues as an adult.
More and more, doctors and experts around the world are looking for safe, drug-free ways to help pregnant women rest. Ayurveda, yoga, and mindfulness practices, like deep breathing, gentle movement, and relaxation methods, are being looked into and used by more and more people as extra health treatments along with modern medicine. These methods are not replacements for medical care; instead, they are tools to help women stay calm and healthy, which helps the growth of the baby.
Quality assurance plays a significant role in bolstering confidence among people worldwide these days. The Ayush Quality Mark is being used for the first time in India. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will showcase it at the second WHO Summit on Traditional Medicine in December 2025. For a long time, it has been challenging to determine the safety, authenticity, and quality of products in foreign markets. The logo simplifies the process. AYUSHEXCIL has taken on the task of managing this project.
Furthermore, the government is more officially on board with it. An important trade agreement between India and Oman and a free trade agreement between India and New Zealand make it clear that India's traditional medical systems are part of the deal. This makes AYUSH the same as other types of health care.
The fifth year of AYUSHEXCIL has begun. Its goals are to improve licensing systems, make better use of free trade deals, and encourage countries to work together more. In January 2022, the group registered as a Section 8 company. The DGFT dubbed it the Nodal Export Promotion Council in July 2023. It now works with the Ministries of Ayush and Commerce and Industry.
There is a lot more going on than just the rise in trade. India is making this change as part of a larger plan to turn ancient information into a controlled, unified system.
